Incense experience

What is Japan’s incense culture?

One of Japan’s traditional cultures, “Kodo” is an artistic experience that allows you to face your heart while enjoying the scent. It is not just about enjoying the scent, but is a profound culture that has been passed down as a way to deepen your connection with the spirit and nature through the five senses.

Incense was introduced to Japan about 1,000 years ago and was originally used in religious ceremonies. Later, the culture of mixing and enjoying scents spread among aristocrats in the Heian period, and eventually developed into a refined art in the form of Kodo. At Kodo events, participants have a unique experience of reflecting on nature, the seasons, and philosophical themes while enjoying the subtle differences in scent.

The characteristic of Japanese incense is that the scent itself is delicate and values harmony. For example, the soft, warm scent of sandalwood and the deep, heavy scent of agarwood are each the culmination of nature and the craftsmanship of the artisans. In addition, the scents express the scenery and emotions of the four seasons, and each one is made to tell a story.

Enjoying incense is not just about smelling the fragrance, it also calms the mind and provides a moment to face oneself. The scent of incense will bring you quiet time and healing in your busy daily life. In addition to the formal occasions of the incense ceremony, incense enjoyed casually at home is also a wonderful way to experience Japanese culture.

Japanese incense culture calms the mind and gives you the opportunity to bring harmony and beauty into your daily life. Take a step on this “path of fragrance” and experience the delicate beauty of Japanese tradition and nature.
